Tamworth Pigs
At Heritage Mountain Ranch we strive to focus not just on the heritage from which we came, but on the the heritage we are leaving behind. One way we do that is providing our children and our community with the healthiest food and livestock. Raising heritage breed livestock is one way we do that.
The Tamworth Hog is an old breed hailing back to Ireland. In 1812, Sir Robert Peel imported some hogs to his estate in Tamworth, England leading many people to believe that this is their place of origin. Â
They are a true grazing pig, known for foraging. Our pigs help clear our overgrown forests and are a natural way to manage some of the weeds and poison oak. These pigs are long, lean and athletic. They are also gentle and have agreeable personalities that fare well with our other livestock. Our roaming rabbit visits them often! Â
Our Tamworths are traditionally known for their tasty bacon, but we've feasted on excellent sausages and hams as well. Â
We feed our pigs a hay diet as well as forage. We also add only organic, non GMO grains to supplement and they enjoy all the acorns they can get on the property. We also feed fresh fruit when we have extra. They live a happy life being very free to be range pigs and not cornered in small commercial pens.
